Jeff Dykzeul February 21, 1954 - October 28, 2016

Click here for a message from daughter Jaclyn, put together and conveyed to us by Mike Bailey, friend and riding partner in the Paso Robles area north of SLO. While Jeff and family knew he likely would not survive his bout with lymphoma, the end was much more sudden than anyone expected, and they do not have specific plans at this time. See Mike's message for Jaclyn's suggestions in lieu of flowers. BCCC and SBW plus friends are riding in Jeff's memory from Catalina Coffee at 8am on 12/17 to the Corner Store in San Pedro one of his favorite places.

A close friend, Mario Obejas of the Beach Cities Cycling Club was with Jeff locally on the 18th of October. Here is the message he put out to the community about it. The picture he refers to is at right, followed by a recent picture of Jeff and daughter Jaclyn.

"Sad news.
When I took the picture above, it was Tuesday - $2 Tuesday at Handel's - on October 18. Jeff told me he had decided not to proceed with aggressive chemo, and that he optimistically had 6 months to go. I drove him around PV and over to Point Fermin for one last look, then returned him to where he was staying. I said my sad goodbye later that night, expecting to go visit him in a few weeks in November.
On Friday, October 28 - only 10 days later - I was informed that my dear friend Jeff passed away. It was a punch to the gut that this kind and extremely decent human being had passed so soon.
Jac his daughter asked me to withhold details until after she could inform everyone she needed to, so that's why I haven't written anything until now.
I love you brother."

Jeff was a longtime SBW member and wonderful guy. In addition to the many nice writeups he did for SBW newsletters (2011 issue here), leadership in the club, Easy Riser ride, 2001 recipient of the Harris-Robinson Award, and many other important contributions, he left a large current cyclist's diary in his "Velobum" articles, which are available HERE. The July entry makes an indirect comments about treatment for his illness.

Patrick Brady of Red Kite Prayer had a touching remembrance of Jeff on his blog. Below right is Patrick's picture of Jeff from a 2003 biking trip to France covering some of the Tour routes.

Jeff designed popular routes for BCCC & SBW. Here is a relatively safe route through the interior of South Bay cities many have ridden with Jeff: the Semi-Industrial Metric Century (SIMC) (pdf). JPEG version below (click to enlarge).
